The Agonist - Five
Today, The Agonist dropped their fifth album, aptly titled 'Five.' With their latest effort, they are poised to dig their heels in and really cement their place in the modern metal scene.
It takes a mere moments into 'Five'to realize that this is no longer Alyssa White-Gluz' former band, but something much greater. On the second album since recruiting the immense vocal talents of singer Vicky Psarakis, the band is playing tighter and more cohesively than ever. The album is laden with catchy hooks and choruses.
The album kicks off with "The Moment" (see video below) giving us a well balanced combination of Psarakis' clean and harsh vocal styles to the backdrop of a an uptempo headbanger.
The album detours mid-way through for "The Raven," where they slow things down for a bit, treating us to both a piano and orchestral accompaniment. This is immediately followed by "The Wake," a very well-placed instrumental to remind us that the melodic side of this band doesn't take a back seat to the death metal side. The break in intensity is short lived, however, as they rip right into "The Resurrection" to follow.
Standout tracks are a bit tough to suggest from this album, as it's truly most enjoyable as a complete experience. That said, a few sure to hook just about anyone are "The Pursuit of Emptiness", "The Raven Eyes" and "The Moment."
From beginning to end, 'Five' is a brutal, yet melodic album full of hooks that will have any fan banging their head to these new tracks. With the previously mentioned exception of two mid-album tracks, the album provides a very consistent experience with each track telling a different story. 'Five' is available on September 30th via Napalm Records.
